Denture Relining
Tuesday, April 6, 2010 11:01When someone gets a new pair of dentures, they’re custom made to the shape of their mouth. This helps with proper fit. A set of dentures can last 7 years (if they are properly cared for). Due to normal wear, as well as the changes of a persons mouth as far as shape, relining is usually necessary.
The relining of a denture involves replacing and shaving on the underside of denture with plastics to assure they are fitting into the gums properly. Bone loss in the mouth area is mostly the cause of need for this procedure. well Prolonged use of the dentures is the second most probable cause.
Relining procedures can be done either in a dental office by a dentist. In some cases it will have to be sent out to a laboratory. There are 3 different kinds of dental relining procedures, one for each persons need.
First there is a hard reline which comes recommended by dental professionals everywhere as something that should be done every 2-3 years. For patients suffering from sensitive gums, who then develop painful spots from underneath their dentures a soft reline would be the best remedy. Temporary relines are available for people who wear their dentures for a long time, and their gums in turn can become swollen or change shape due to over-wear. Before proper dentures can be fitted temporary relines will usually contain an anaesthetic to help subside the swelling and make the person feel more comfortable.
